Single Session Family Consultations and Single Session Work with Young People and Families - Melbourne
by Family Reconciliation Mediation Program (FRMP).
23rd February 2015
FRMP is very pleased to be able to offer this training to the homelessness sector, in partnership with the Bouverie Centre, on single session work with young people and families. This training will be offered three times in Melbourne and five times in rural Victoria, with eight reflective practice sessions offered as follow up for training participants. Learnings from the training will be consolidated at the next FRMP Conference, currently scheduled for March 2015. Background The Family Reconciliation Mediation Program (FRMP) is funded by the Department of Human Services (DHS) to build the capacity of the homelessness service system in Victoria to support young people who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness to: - stay or return home, if safe and appropriate,
- connect or reconnect with family, significant others or community,
- recover from family conflict and breakdown
- build on their capacity to create ‘families of choice’.
Homelessness providers in Victoria identified, through a training needs analysis undertaken by FRMP in 2013, that their priority for practice development in working with young people who are homeless is the development of skills to work with young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in conjunction with their families. Brief Description Single Session Work with Young People and Families provide a framework to help practitioners make the most of each encounter with clients (whether it be an individual/couple/family session) and offer a unique opportunity to meaningfully engage families/affected others who may seek out a support service only once or twice at a time. This two-day workshop draws together principles from Single Session Work and Family Sensitive Practice. Learning Outcomes: - Understand the history, philosophy and practice principles of the SSW approach and Family Sensitive Practices;
- Identify when SSW and inclusion of family could be helpful within their own work contexts and when it could be contra-indicated;
- Practice skills in a safe and supportive learning environment, with the coaching of experienced Bouverie clinical supervisors, i.e.; Practice the art of maintaining confidentiality with one’s primary client whilst also sharing some information, as appropriate, between client and family members; Practice the facilitation of productive meetings with families, including the primary client;
- Consider how to explain SSFC to clients and colleagues; „h Share ideas about the benefits and challenges of involving others in work with primary clients; „h Negotiate the involvement of family or other significant persons in an individual client’s care;
- Learn about common challenges in working with more than one person in the room (especially conflict) and useful ways to address them (i.e, curiosity, averting the process, positive reframing, filtering, specificity and circular questioning).
